Thank you for your interest in the Applied Masculinities and Positive Psychology (AMPP) Lab! Our research focuses on two broad, interconnected areas: men's mental health and masculinities, and positive psychology and psychotherapy. Students in the lab participate in collaborative research projects while developing their own related research interests.

Considering Research Fit

Research and faculty-mentor fit are important considerations in the KU Counseling Psychology PhD admissions process. I do not expect prospective students to have research interests identical to my current projects or to study the same populations I study. Instead, I think about fit more broadly in terms of whether the questions, constructs, and processes a student hopes to investigate connect meaningfully with my research program. I value intellectual curiosity, collaboration, and students who are interested in developing their research skills and an independent scholarly identity.

Clinical and research interests do not need to be identical. Our doctoral program integrates research and clinical training, and students have opportunities to develop clinical competencies across a variety of settings and populations. When considering fit with me as a faculty mentor, I encourage prospective students to focus primarily on the research questions they would be excited to pursue during doctoral training.
